Welcome to Year 6

Once again, we will continue with our topic ‘Extreme Weather’ this week and our maths ‘Apprentice’ work will continue to be separate and will be under the daily timetable as before.

Start this week by viewing the following slides about earthquakes and what causes them:

Extreme Earth Geography Slide 4

Once again, you are going to add to the work that you have done over the last couple of weeks. You may choose to produce/include diagrams/pictures, 3d models, etc and you can record the information in the non-chronological report and/or presentation that you have already started.

In class, some homemade books have been produced and these are looking great – for those still working at home, please send me pictures of any that you put together for me to see.

This week, in your presentation/non-chronological report/book, you may want to include information/headings (magnitude, damage, injuries and deaths etc) about the earthquakes in the following places (as before, you can pick and choose which ones, if any, to use):

  • Messina, Italy (1908)
  • Vancouver Island, Canada (1946)
  • Kamchatka, Russia (1952)
  • Valdiva, Chile (1960)
  • Rat Islands, Alsaka (1965)
  • Hebei, China (1976)
  • Mexico City, Mexico (1985)
  • California, USA (1992)
  • Sumatra, Indonesia (2005)
  • Haiti (2010)
  • Christchurch, New Zealand (2011)
  • Saravan, India (2013)

Remember, when writing about any of the above, you need to try to put things into your own words –don’t just copy and paste the answers that you find from an online search.

For English, I would like us to put together a ‘virtual assembly’ for the end of term, in which I’d like to include your favourite memories (or even worst/embarrassing memories as these can be funny) from your time at the school. Discuss these memories with someone else and then write down these memories, giving full, clear details about them. If you are working from home, can you then film these and email them to me by the end of the week please?

Music/Singing Assemblies

Please see this week's message from our music teacher, Mrs Lawrence:

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all well and happy!

This week I have some dancing for you to do. When singers perform, whether that is in pop music or musical theatre (or many other genres of music), they very often have to dance too. Here are three short dance tutorials from Disney. Each section of choreography* is taken from one of their Broadway musicals and taught by cast members. I'd like you to choose one to learn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSEUR2gZUFc Seize the Day (Newsies)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PA_t0pSYJc Arabian Nights (Aladdin)

*Do you remember the word 'choreography'? its just a fancy word for dance moves. Someone who makes up dance moves is called a 'choreographer'.

I’d also like to introduce you to Oti Mabuse’s dance classes. She and her husband are both professional dancers and her specialism is ballroom dancing. However, she has made lots of videos for kids, teaching routines to pop and musical theatre songs. Here is a fun and simple routine to a song called ‘Believe’, by Cher. If you like it, do check out her other dance classes. Perhaps that might be a fun thing to do over the summer holidays.

If you enjoy dancing, maybe you could take another song you like and make up some dance moves to go with it. Perhaps you would like to watch one of the musicals the songs are from. I watched the new version of 'Aladdin' recently, with my children. I love Princess Jasmine's new song 'Speechless'.

I hope you all have a fun week!

Best wishes,

Mrs Lawrence
