Welcome to Year 4

Hello Year 4.

I hope you enjoyed the Anglo-Saxon project. I have been delighted with the work you have produced. I know that as time continues, it can be difficult to motivate yourself to complete the work but it really is important that you try. Remember all of the things we have done in class talking about the importance of resilience and perseverance. Especially with the research tasks, it is really important that you have a go independently first. Of course if you have any problems or you don’t understand something you can email me, but it should be you doing the hard work, not your parents!

If we were at school, we would be completing a unit of work on food in D&T, so we are going to recreate this at home. The project is called LITTLE HEATH LOCKDOWN BAKEOFF! There are a series of tasks below for you to complete for this project. Unlike the other projects, you will need to do all 5 of the tasks below in chronological order as this is a food based project. Please make sure you complete all of the steps and when you get to creating your recipes, please email me a copy of them, as I will then put them all together into a digital Year 4 recipe book for you all to keep. Please find the tasks below under the title LITTLE HEATH LOCKDOWN BAKEOFF.

In response to your feedback, I am also changing the maths where you will have a choice about which tasks you complete. I will still be setting the normal daily maths activities for myself and Miss Russon’s group as I know some of you are getting on really well with this. However, I have also got a whodunit booklet as an alternative task. Completion of each activity in this booklet leads you to a piece of evidence.  Once you have completed all 5 activities (one each day) you will be able to piece all your evidence together to solve the crime. This is an alternative to the daily maths, so you do not need to do both (though you can if you choose to do so!). This maths booklet will be right at the top under the maths heading, and you can choose how much to do each day, but the booklet should be completed by Friday. If you have any problems with the Mathletics tasks this week, please email me the specific activity name so I can help you.

As usual, the STEM activity booklet is at the bottom of this page too.

LITTLE HEATH LOCKDOWN BAKEOFF

Task 1- Design your showstopper.

Your challenge is to create a showstopper that represents your time in lockdown. This can be a sweet or savoury item. Think very carefully about how you would like this to look and how you are going to piece this together. For example, if it was me, I might bake an upside cupcake (to represent how life has been turned upside down) decorated with a dog face to represent my new puppy. If I wanted to do a savoury option, I might make a spaghetti bolognaise pizza, the spaghetti representing how messy this time has been, and the pizza to show off a new skill that I have learnt in this time! Be as creative as possible but also think about which items of food you will need to make this. Try and use food items that your family would normally purchase in the weekly shop or already have in the cupboard. You absolutely do not need to spend lots of money on this. You may need to brainstorm your ideas first, and then I would like you to draw a detailed picture of your design. Make sure it is neat and colourful and clearly labelled.

Task 2- Write out your ingredients and method.

I would really like you to take your time with your presentation on this task, because once you have completed this, I would like you to email me a copy so I can turn all of your recipes into a Year 4 recipe book.  This can even be in written form or on the computer, but as your design is unique, nothing should be copied and pasted -try and turn it into your own words if you are using parts of an existing recipe.

Task 3 – Design the packing for you item

Think carefully about how your item would appear in a supermarket and the packaging that it would come in. You could even make a 3D model if you wanted to using cardboard to show the packaging box, or you can design the front cover. If your showstopper is a meal that wouldn’t come in packaging, you could design a poster to promote it. Think about everything we have learnt about when making posters, including colour, sizing, pictures and font. Again, this can be done by hand on paper or created digitally.

Task 4- Make your showstopper.

You may need to organise with an adult when you can do this as it is important someone is there to supervise you with any cutting or using the oven. Make sure you take some pictures of the different steps.

Task 5- Evaluate your showstopper.

If you have shared your food with your family, you could ask them to be food critics so they can review your food! You could create an evaluation booklet with all of their comments along with your own, you could do a star rating, or you could do a video blog recording evaluations. I would like you to consider the following
-Appearance
-Smell
-Taste
-Texture

Maths:

Choose option 1 (The Mystery of the Spoiled Party Bags) or option 2 (Daily maths activities). You do not need to do both – but of course you can do if you wish.

Option 1: ‘The Mystery of the Spoiled Party Bags’.
There are 5 activities, one to be completed on each day of the week. The answers are at the bottom of this pack. Only check your answers once you are finished the whole week, not individual activities.

Music/Singing Assemblies

Please see below message from our music teacher, Mrs Lawrence:

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all well and happy.

Our song this week (for everyone) will be ‘The Place Where The Lost Things Go’ from the film ‘Mary Poppins Returns’. Here is a version with lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKc0jVW6AaU If you find it a little low at the start, you can speak the words, rather than singing them. Here is a version without the singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpLTjJDCsJg

This is a very gentle and dreamy song and has quite a different sort of mood to most of the songs we have sung together. In the film, Mary Poppins, who is nanny to three children, sings this song to remind them that their mother, who has died, is still with them. I, personally, really like this song because it reminds me of my Dad, who has a illness which makes his memories fade away. When I first heard this song, it reminded me that memories are never gone really, even if they are a little harder to reach some days.

For the older ones, if you would like to do an extra activity, I would also like you to also choose a song that means something to you.

First, I would like you to listen to it carefully and see if you can answer the following questions:

  1. What instruments can you hear? Do the instruments change in different sections of the song?
  2. What is the mood or feeling of the song? Is it happy / sad / angry / romantic / dreamy / hopeful / determined, etc.? Does the mood change during the song?
  3. Can you think or at least one way that the writer, singer and musicians (or producer) achieves this mood? For example, if it is sad, the music may be slow and quiet and could have one solo instrument , such as a violin. If the music is angry, it may be loud, with a fast and aggressive beat. If the music is happy, it may be upbeat with a catchy rhythm.
  4. What is it about the song that makes it special for you?

Then, perhaps you could learn your song and sing/perform it? When you’re ready, you could film yourself performing it and then watch the film and think of at least one thing you think you did really well and one thing you could do to make it even better.

For the younger ones, you could make up some movements to a song of your choice. It could be our song for this week or it could be a different song. Think about whether the music is fast or slow, loud or quiet. Can you move in a way that fits with the music? You could either decide on different moves to fit different parts of the song or just improvise (that means make it up as you go along!). There is a big word for the movements we put to a song or piece of music. The word is ‘choreography’. Do you think you can remember that word?

I hope you continue to have fun and enjoy yourself this week.

Best wishes,

Mrs Lawrence
