Welcome to Year 2
KS1 Rainforest Project
I hope those of you working at home have enjoyed the ‘Animals and their Habitat’. Our next topic leads on from this as we begin to explore ‘The Rainforest.’
This project has so many activities and craft ideas that we will be running it for two weeks. Year One and Year Two will both be working on this topic.
You do not need to do all the activities as there are so many, but try and pick a broad variety of tasks to complete.
- Where is the Rainforest? Have a look on a world map or globe. If you do not have one you can look online. Draw a picture of our planet showing where the Rainforest is and if you can add some of the countries that make up parts of the Rainforest.
- Draw a picture of the Rainforest and label the different levels – The Sunlit Zone, The Canopy, The Understory and The Forest Floor.
Add some of the animals to each level, remembering that they all inhabit suitable areas.
- Make a list of the animals that inhabit the Rainforest. You could do an A-Z list like last time, or just make a list with as many different species as you can find.
- Research The Sumatran Monkey. Write 5 sentences about this animal. Find out what it eats, which level it inhabits and other facts.
- Do the same for The Anaconda Snake.
- Read the story ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julia Donaldson.
- Write your own story about an animal that has lost its mother.
- Listen to clips of Rainforest sounds. Close your eyes while you listen and draw a picture of what you imagined.
- Use different materials to create a rainforest picture.
- Draw a snake and use pencils or water colours to show the beautiful patterns on its skin.

Comprehension Activity
Rainforests are big forests that get lots of rain. They are found in warm places. A rainforest is made up of different parts. The Forest Floor is damp, dark and hot. The Understory is found under the canopy. This is where the larger animals live, such as leopards, gorillas and huge snakes. The Canopy is where the leaves of trees join up to make an umbrella. The Sunlit Zone has lots of tall trees and sunlight.
Rainforests are full of lots of different kinds of wildlife. Most of the animals live in the canopy where it is hot and dry. Red-eyed frogs and toucans are some of the animals that live in the canopy.
Rainforests give us oxygen to breathe. We get many things from rainforests, such as bananas, chocolate, nuts and rubber. Lots of the medicines we use come from plants in the rainforest.
Questions
- What is the weather like in the rainforest?
- Which part of the rainforest is dark and damp?
- Which layer do most animals inhabit?
- Describe the sunlit zone
- What animals may you find living in the canopy?
- What do we get from rainforests?
Dictation Task
Read this to your child and give them time to write as you dictate:
In the rainforest the floor is hot and dark. Lots of animals live in the rainforest. It is hot and there is a lot of rain. The sunlit zone gets lots of sun and has tall trees. Bats can be found living here.
Rainforests give us bananas, chocolate and nuts.

Music/Singing Assemblies

Hi everyone,
I hope you’ve enjoyed the sunshine this week - it’s been incredibly hot, hasn’t it! For those of you who remember Mr Spider, he’s been sunbathing in my garden and now has a beautiful suntan!
We have two songs for this week. If you have time to learn one, please choose whichever you prefer.
Firstly, there is ‘Stand By Me’. You will notice on the lyric video that there are simple chords. Some of you will know that chords are groups of notes which usually make up the accompaniment to a song. They can be played by several different instruments together, like you might hear in a band, or by one instrument, such as a piano or guitar.
If you already know how to play chords on a musical instrument, perhaps you could play along to the song. If you have access to an iPad with the app GarageBand, perhaps you could have a go at playing along with the chords on a virtual guitar or keyboard. I’ve included an instruction sheet, if you’re not sure how to use GarageBand. It also has the lyric sheet with chords.
If you have a musical instrument, real or virtual, at home, maybe you could make up a chord pattern yourself. Have a listen to the sound of the chords. What sounds good to you?

Secondly, here is one of my favourite songs, the classic ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. It is from the musical film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and was originally sung by Judy Garland.
If you are singing this, can you hear where Judy breathes in the song? Can you have a go at singing through each line without breathing until the end? If you need to take an extra breath, that’s just fine. See if you can decide where to breathe and stick to those places. Can you imagine each line is like a rainbow and sing through to the end of it?
