Welcome to Year 2

KS1 LEARNING PROJECT - TRANSITION

This week’s learning project focuses on supporting your child with transitioning to their new class. Please discuss their favourite memories and achievements whilst also considering their hopes and dreams for the next academic year. Below are some creative ideas.

  • Create a goodbye message to a teacher or class friend
  • My hopes and dreams for year 3
  • Create a memory jar. Using coloured paper to draw and write down your special memories
  • Design a medal, you could add string or ribbon. Ask your child of their proudest achievement inside and outside of the classroom
  • Draw around your hand. Write something special about a friend on each finger: kind, friendly, helpful, funny, creative, sharing.
  • Discuss what makes your child special and the importance of being unique. What makes them different to other people? Children can create a picture or make a list
  • Read and listen to the story ‘Giraffes can’t dance’. Talk about how Gerald the Giraffe showed determination when trying to achieve his goals. Discuss with your child what they would like to achieve next year e.g. to improve my handwriting

Music/Singing Assemblies

Please see this week's message from our music teacher, Mrs Lawrence:

Hi everyone,

This is our last song and set of music activities for this term. Our song will be ‘The Bear Necessities’ from ‘The Jungle Book’ movie:

I also have a few activities for you to do over the summer, if you would like to. For the younger ones, I thought you might like to make a musical instrument and then do some rhythm practice. Take a look at the links below:

Listening

For the older children, can you name the orchestral instruments as you hear them played in this piece of music?

Basic Music Theory Recap:

I would also love it if you could recap a little music theory. Take a look at these two simple video tutorials. They aren’t too long. If they interest you, there are lots more you can find.

Extension task:

For those of you who already read music, don’t worry about watching the videos. Can you instead write me a 16 bar piece of music? You can print off blank manuscript paper (that’s paper we use to write music), in many different styles, here: https://www.blanksheetmusic.net

If you do this task, please do send it to your teachers to pass on to me. I would love to see your music.

Acting Through Song:

Lastly, if you enjoy performing, why not try performing/acting a song. Songs from musicals are ideal for this, but you can do it with pop songs too. Read the lyrics (that’s the words) and see if you can imagine how the character is feeling at each point in the song, then learn the song and act it out.

You can find all these songs with lyrics on YouTube. Please do check with a parent before searching for anything, though! If you would like to, you can also purchase a backing track (quite cheaply) for most songs from https://www.karaoke-version.co.uk .

On these tracks, you can alter the key (that means make the notes of the song higher or lower), if the original version is not ideal for your voice. Choose a song you really like. If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few suggestions:

(I’ve put songs sung traditionally by girls first and by boys afterwards, but please don’t let that limit you. It really doesn’t matter.)

How Far I’ll Go - Moana

Naughty - Matilda

Part of Your World - The Little Mermaid

Journey to the Past - Anastasia

Speechless - Aladdin

Can You Imagine That? - Mary Poppins Returns

Colours of the Wind - Pocahontas

The Next Right Thing - Frozen 2

Consider Yourself - Oliver

Little People - Les Miserables

I Can Go The Distance - Hercules

I Just Can’t Wait To Be King - Lion King

One Jump Ahead - Aladdin

Electricity - Billy Elliott

Lost in the Woods - Frozen 2

If Only You Would Listen - School of Rock

Easy songs for younger ones

My favourite Things - The Sound of Music

Castle on a Cloud - Les Miserables

The Perfect Nanny - Mary Poppins

It’s been lovely to see a few of you on Fridays and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone in September. I hope you have a lovely summer holiday!

Best wishes,

Mrs Lawrence
